Ice Cream | Nikko and Is
“Yeah, I’ve gained a few pounds, so I’m extra fluffy,” Nicolai laughed, though the comment was far from true. He’d actually lost a few pounds, not that it was all that noticeable. The ice cream was all he’d eaten that day, and it was because his appetite was hardly ever present. Nikko displayed a genuine smile when Isabelle continued more seriously. So she felt the same way. “Me too. You broke right through my bravado. Got me all sappy.”
Nicolai inhaled deeply and shifted in his seat, keeping his eyes steadied on their ice cream. Isabelle wanted to know how he felt about her? He’d have to make it clear. “Okay,” He breathed, taking a few minutes to devise a game plan, a take on how he was going to go about it all. “Okay. I like you… a lot. And this is about to get extremely cheesy, but you asked for it.” His spoon dug into the last of his ice cream before reaching his mouth, and he made sure to drag the movement out. He was procrastinating. Enough of that. “You’re beautiful, and funny, and sexy, and sweet, and you fit all too well in my arms,” Nikko began again, setting the dish on the table and hugging Isabelle closer as if validating his last comment. Mmm. “I always want to be near you, and when I’m not, you’re always on my mind. I don’t want you talking to any other guys, ever, and I don’t want you talking to any lesbians either. I think you’re kinda perfect for me but that it isn’t fair to you.” He stopped once more to recollect his thoughts and analyze Isabelle’s reaction to his words before continuing again. “I wish I was better, for you, but I’m not. And I wish I wasn’t falling for you, but I am.”
Nicolai pushed his empty dish towards an employee and waited for Isabelle to finish. He toyed with the hem of her shirt absently, pulling it upwards to reveal a sliver of her tan skin before pulling it back down possessively. She was so fit. “I’m done,” He teased, mocking a dismissive tone. “You can get off now.” But he honestly didn’t want her to. Nik leaned closer to Isabelle’s ear and smirked lightly, disregarding the looks his actions earned them. “You should sleep over tonight,” He whispered, getting off of the stool but keeping his arms wrapped tightly around the girl.
Ice Cream | Nikko and Is
Isabelle’s eyes quickly shifted to look around the shop before back at Nikko as he patted his lap. Her eyebrows raised, as if to ask if he was serious and for some reason, Is could tell he was somewhat for real. With a roll of her eyes, Is slid off her stool and onto his lap, finding comfort in the position. Her eyes looked around the little shop to see if people were making comments and what not on their closeness, but it almost seemed as if they didn’t care, which made Isabelle feel alright. Ever since her issues got worse, Isabelle was beginning to care more and more about what people thought of her, mainly because she wondered whether or not people could tell there was something wrong with her. And sometimes, she was sure the world knew.
“Clearly I don’t…” She said under her breath as Nikko said she didn’t know how much he liked her. She listened to his words and tried to find truth in the tone of his voice. Isabelle was sort of stunned. Here he was, a boy on the verge of death, caring about a girl with mental issues. How melodramatic was that? But instead of running like she thought he should, instead of forgetting Is and living the last few days he had constantly happy, he was here with her. He was telling her he wasn’t leaving. Isabelle didn’t know what to say, since in her mind all she could picture was her father and the day her mother left. What if she did that? All the pain on her father’s face. Sure she hadn’t been with Nikko nearly long enough for him to have the same effect, but the questions of their future still burned in her mind.
Though she had begun to eat her ice cream, the words Nikko spoke sat at the front of her mind, and she found herself watching him as he ate his ice cream, wondering how serious he was. Wondering if his thoughts on all this would ever change. Isabelle barely could tell the flavor of the ice cream her mind was so far away, but she ate to fill the silence that fell over them. Even though her mind was filled with so many thoughts, she found sitting in Nikko’s lap so close to him…calming. But as she looked away from her ice cream, she noticed some workers rolling their eyes at the two, clearly not fans of PDA in their shop. “You know…people are looking now. I bet you anything they are thinking ‘god damn only one person per stool.’” She said, with a small laugh, trying to break the silence.
Nicolai watched hopefully as Isabelle made her decision, then smirked as she made her way into his lap. He honestly only felt completely at ease with her in his embrace, despite how idiotic or cheesy it may have seemed. He wound his arms around her torso and rested a hand on her waist, tucking his chin into the curve of her shoulder. Nikko planted a light kiss below Isabelle’s ear once he noticed her looking around the shop and scoffed lowly. “Don’t worry about anyone else, Bells,” He urged, undeniably comfortable with their current position. He wasn’t ever one to mind what others thought of him. ”I’m comfy. And you know you are, too.”
Nikko couldn’t contain the sigh from escaping his lips as Isabelle validated his suspicions. She obviously didn’t know the magnitude of his feelings for her, and it was obviously his fault. He just wasn’t ever really open to expressing the way he felt, and when he had done so in the past, it was always second to the other in the relationship. He waited until he was sure the feelings were mutual, never simply putting himself out there. Isabelle, though, was a tougher nut to crack. He’d have to change his ways. ”I could tell you,” Nicolai offered, trying his hardest to abide by their rule and remain without scruples. “I could try to tell you, if you wanted.” He couldn’t bring himself to make it sound like a sure thing, because he had the smallest of ideas if any as to how to go about articulating ones emotions. He would definitely try to, though, if that’s what it took to finally find out where the two stood relationship-wise. Hopefully he wouldn’t be shot down.
Nicolai freed one arm from around Isabelle’s waist to shovel another spoonful of heaven into his mouth and laughed at the annoyed stares they were getting from the workers. He wasn’t ever a big fan of PDA himself, but hey, things change. “They’re going to have to deal with it,” He joked, loud enough that the employees would surely hear. “‘Cause you’re stuck here until I’m done with my ice cream.” Nik licked a bit of whipped cream from his lower lip and took a moment to admire Bells before flexing the muscles in the arm wrapped around her as if reminding her that she wasn’t going anywhere.

Ice Cream | Nikko and Is
“What?” Isabelle said to Nikko’s look of disbelief before he put her wallet back in her pocket. At the movement, she couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the boy. Really? So sure, men paying for things was cute and all chivalry-like and should happen more often. But it had been a while and Is was just so used to being independent, paying for her own things that at first, this all came to a shock. Then after she remember, oh wait, this is what boys do, she tried to ignore it and just move on from the thoughts in her head. That’s what boyfriends do, she thought, and mentally hit herself for her thoughts. It was getting really annoying how close her heart wanted her to get to Nikko when he could be gone any second.
Is turned in her stool to look at Nikko, examining his face to understand what he meant by his question. Of course, she thought, her stupid problems. She still hated herself for what she said to him. Honestly, she was shocked her was sitting with her right now. It was more than she could ever dream of. But here he was, not only talking to her, but asking if she was ok. Was she alright? Well, Isabelle wasn’t really sure if she would ever be ‘alright.’ There would always be a constant reminder of what was wrong with her. She would always have to keep her pills on her, remember to take them, and brace for the consequences if she forgot to take them.
“I guess I’m fine. I mean…I’m not like I was yesterday. But I’ll live from that…I think. No, I know. Sorry, my therapist says I can’t be pessimistic about my problems or it will make it worse.” Isabelle said, her voice growing soft as she finished speaking. “You shouldn’t have to deal with me.” Isabelle mentioned softly before looking back at Nikko. “I mean, you have enough to deal with and now the girl you spend time with has found out she’s a nutcase. So you wanna run away, go right ahead, it’s probably best.”
Isabelle smiled as her ice cream appeared in front of her and grabbed the cup and began to eat. Towards the end of the day it seemed Is could eat anything in front of her. Side affect from the pills she thought, kill her appetite all day until night time then make her feel like she has a tapeworm. Plus, eating would help to soften the blow if Nikko did decided to leave her sitting at the counter like she thought he should. After what happened the night before, she thought it was what she deserved. Isabelle in her mind thought she didn’t deserve to be with Nikko, even if they weren’t together.
Nicolai smirked mischievously and squeezed Isabelle’s sides, hoping the brunette would emit an adorable squeal that he could pick on later. “You’ve got an appetite is all,” He teased, nonchalantly shrugging his shoulders. “And it’s a rather large one for your size too, shortstuff.” Hopefully she wouldn’t be offended by that little comment, and that she knew it was but a joke. Nik glanced at the employees as those who had nothing to do lounged around the almost-empty shop before displaying his best puppy-dog face and reverting his gaze to his target. He looked at Isabelle with his lower lip jutted out and forced a weak, strangled whimper. She was too far away. Her closeness had become his favorite form of comfort, and when she wasn’t within a twelve inch radius, the comfort vanished. “Come sit with me?” He begged, patting his lap and struggling not to laugh, because a large part of him was, in fact, serious.
Nikko nodded sympathetically as Isabelle described her feelings to him, trying his absolute best to understand. It was heartbreaking to see and hear how all of the newfound obstacles were taking their toll on the girl, being that she was always so strong and confident in his eyes. And then, ‘You shouldn’t have to deal with me.’ Nicolai dug the heel of his shoe into the tiling of the ice cream shop, shaking his head. “You must not understand how much I like you, Bells,” He laughed bitterly, forcing a polite smile and an utterance of thanks as their ice cream was served. She really couldn’t have had an idea as to how he felt about her. And it wasn’t exactly her fault, either, being that Nik hadn’t ever made an effort to tell her. “I want to deal with you, you aren’t a nutcase, and I wouldn’t run away from you, or without you. Give me some credit.”
Nik stretched a bronze, muscled arm across the serving counter and pulled his ice cream closer, taking a moment to appreciate it before digging in. He had to sustain a moan as the flavours mixed and melted in his mouth, and even moreso once he watched Isabelle start on hers. That was attractive. She was attractive. He couldn’t help but let his mind wander to what it would be like, what they would be like, if he stopped holding back. All of this time he had been taking everything extremely slowly because of the circumstances. Always the circumstances. It would be smart of him to forget about them for a while and just let loose with Isabelle. To do what he so obviously wanted. Nicolai shoveled some more ice cream into his mouth and kept a sideways gaze trained on Is, mulling it all over.

Wicked headache.

Ice Cream | Nikko and Is
In all honestly, Is felt bad. Well, more like guilty. Here she was, creating a pity party for her and her new found mental illness while she knew what Nikko lived with was five times worse. Sure, this could one day make Isabelle go crazy and potentially kill herself or leave everyone she loves, but Nik’s problems were more present. And she truly felt bad for stealing the spotlight. Isabelle wanted to make him happy, focus on him, not the other way around. Who knew how much time he had left, and that thought scared Is way too much.
She had thought about that the other day, how it was possible to grow so attached to someone in such a short amount of time. Did she grow attached due to the fact that somewhere she knew her time with Nikko was short anyways so get closer faster? Or was it just what was destined to happen, they were meant to find each other and all that corny crap? Isabelle wasn’t sure, but as she thought about it, she began to get a bit nervous. Here she was, growing attached to a dying man. That didn’t seem smart at all.
But she couldn’t deny how she felt when she was around him. In truth, she hated the stage they were at. Isabelle wasn’t one for the unknown, she hated it. It’s why relationships were very clear cut in her eyes. One night stands were that, she never really slept with a man from one of those after the night. And then she had relationships, clear and defined. So this whole limbo stage was uneasy for her. Isabelle wasn’t used to not having a label, not having her life clean and organized. It was hard enough her brain was a mess, so was the relationship with the guy she was falling for.
“Wonky is not a thing, it’s an adjective. It’s another words for crazy. Well, my word for crazy.” She let him wrap his arms around her, enjoying the feel of his body behind hers. She couldn’t help but laugh as he pushed her along to the building, his breath tingling on her ear as he spoke. Isabelle tried hard not to frown when he left his spot holding her, but found it easier than she thought as he opened the door for her. “My, what a gentleman. So,” She began, walking into the shop, “What are you getting? Oh wait, let me guess…chocolate?” Isabelle smiled extremely cheesy to Nikko before walking up to the counter to place her order. “Um, yeah, can I get a cup of…chocolate chip cookie dough, 3 scoops, with whipped cream? Thanks.” Isabelle turned back to Nikko and smiled before getting out her wallet to pay for her ice cream.
Nicolai wasn’t exactly very aware of what Isabelle’s disorder entailed, but by the way she’d simultaneously been ecstatic and enraged at the same time the other night, he guessed it was pretty serious. He was never very educated on the p’s and q’s of bipolar disorders, the reason simply being that he never had to be. Now, of course, that someone near and dear to him had to deal with it, he vowed to do his research. Nikko didn’t like not knowing what was going on. He liked to be in control, in charge of things. Once he delved a bit deeper into Is and talked everything through with her he would be much more comfortable.
His feelings for the girl as of then were extremely confusing. One minute he would laugh with her as if they were best friends - which they were, to him, for now - and the next, a simple glance into her eyes would send his heart racing a mile a minute. Those brown eyes of hers seemed to bore right into his soul. Nicolai wasn’t immune to catching ’feelings’, feelings, as much as he liked to boast the opposite. He also wasn’t used to spending so much time with just one girl, or thinking about that girl. He knew that he liked her more than he should given the circumstances they were both under, and a part of him embraced it while another flashed warning signals. Nik was too far gone, naturally, and someone was going to hurt. He pushed that all out of his head and flashed a wolfish grin.
Nikko raised his hands and shrugged his shoulders as Isabelle defined ‘wonky’ for him. So that was what it meant. He used to think of it as a suggestive term. Wonky sounded kind of provocative. “Well, now I know.” He smiled, circling his ear with a finger - the sign used in elementary school to call someone crazy; juvenile actions were sort of his forte. Nicolai followed Isabelle to the serving counter and crept behind her once more, this time lifting her up and onto one of the stools. Damn. She must have been really hungry if she planned on finishing that order on her own. Nik widened his eyes in a disbelieving look as he slid her wallet back into her pocket. Once he sat in the one beside her, he turned his attention to an employee and extracted his own cash from his back pocket. “I’ll have the same. Thank you.”
After pre-paying for their ice cream, Nicolai licked his lips and turned to face Bells, shooting her a questioning look. He wasn’t questioning anything in particular, just asking for any answers she was willing to give. Whatever was on her mind, whatever made her eyes so sad every now and then. “Are you alright, Bells? Like, really alright?”

Ice Cream | Nikko and Is
Nicolai was unsure about a lot. He wasn’t sure of how playful he could be, afraid that if he made one joke too many he could be pulling Isabelle’s trigger. He didn’t know how to empathize with mental diseases, never having had experience with one. He wasn’t sure of how to speak about her disorder without being insensitive or offensive. And worst of all, Nikko was unsure of where they stood at the moment. Stuck somewhere between friends and more than friends. But he and Isabelle were together now, which meant it was another moment he had to throw his entirety into; a moment he had to savor. He couldn’t continue raining.on his own parade.
The feeling of Isabelle in his arms, smothered by his embrace, was one of Nikko’s favorites. She fit so well against him, the crown of her head within the crevice of his neck and her body curved into his own. Her saccharine scent flooded his nostrils and her warmth crawled all over his skin, enveloping him in some foreign - yet wonderful - feeling. But foreign feelings were a step in the right direction. Or at least, they seemed like it. The only problem was that now, he couldn’t be completely sure of how Isabelle felt. All of the things she’d said the night before about her feelings toward him… were they real, or were they enhanced by her disorder?
Nicolai squeezed Isabelle’s waist gently as they pulled apart from the hug, then slid his hands down to rest on her hips. His lips spread into an effusive smile once Isabelle’s touched them, and he beamed down at the petite brunette. “I missed you more. And there’s a lot we have to talk about,” He insisted, stealing one last peck on the lips. Nik nodded sympathetically as Isabelle spoke, but he could hardly contain his laughter once that last word crossed her lips. “Wonky? What the hell is a wonky?” He chuckled, only half-joking with the inquiry.
Glancing hungrily at the ice cream shop, Nicolai made his way behind Isabelle and wove his arms around her waist with his chest against her back, steering her toward the entrance. One of his hands rested atop her flat stomach, the other over that one. “Hurry up, I’m starved,” He growled playfully, his lips inches from her ear. He guided her forward and only released her from his arms once he had to open the door. Nikko swung the door open and held it ajar, waiting for her to step inside before entering for himself and letting his eyes rake the different flavours.
Ice Cream | Nikko and Is
As Nicolai made plans for ice cream with his lovely, hilarious Isabelle, he thought back to the little spat that had taken place just a night ago. He thought about how hard it must’ve been for Is to look back at their conversation, and how difficult it must be not to be able to control your own emotions. How scary. It reminded him that the world was so much bigger than his own problems, and that everyone had their own baggage. Isabelle didn’t deserve it. The mood swings, the anxiety, the helplessness. She didn’t deserve any of it at all. He felt horrible. The night before wasn’t the greatest, to say the absolute least, but it was definitely necessary. Isabelle had confessed the seriousness of her newfound illness to Nikko, and he was glad that she trusted him enough to do so.
Nicolai’s illness was progressing, of course. It was getting worse everyday. He had just begun to noticed things - he’d get tired more quickly, he hardly had an appetite, and he was losing weight. The shaking of his hands had ceased again, being that it came and went, but as it left another toil always seemed to replace it. To put it frankly - it sucked. A lot. But hey, Nik was used to it, and having Isabelle around sort of dulled the dispiriting of it all. It humbled the hurt. Isabelle made him happy most of the time.
Nikko’s feelings for Bells were escalating, for sure. He wasn’t used to being so fond of anyone aside from his family. It seemed as if he admired her more every time they spoke. She was incredibly funny, and sassy, and sweet for someone that has to deal with so much bullshit. He missed her like crazy when they weren’t talking, and he found himself upset whenever anyone other than himself would catch her attention. Whenever she’d so much as say a word to another guy or vice-versa, his hands curled into fists. Jealousy was a huge sign that he was becoming attached. Or that he was already attached. Probably the latter.
Nik got dressed quickly, spritzed on a bit of cologne, and left his house, beginning to walk toward the ice cream shop Isabelle had chosen for their… meeting? He definitely did not want to keep her waiting, and he was also sort of anxious, sort of eager to see her again as well. They had yet to thoroughly discuss the things that were said the night before. Nicolai had a few things he wanted to say. Most of all, he’d been craving a kiss and hug from the stunning brunette. Once Nikko neared the shop, he could already make out Isabelle’s silhouette. He sped up and jogged the rest of the way, navigating around pedestrians. Nik swept her into a tight hug. “Bells! I missed you.”
